This thread has been done, but I'm too lazy to find it, so let's just start over!

I saw Little Children last night.  It came out in October, but we just got it here last night (presumably because of the Golden Globe nominations).  I would definitely recommend it if you like fucked up movies.  The primary focus is on adultery and child sex offenders, but the way the story is presented is what makes it so unique.  It runs the full spectrum of moods and emotions from evil and dysfunction to joy and beauty.  It could be classified as a dark dramedy with an indie flair.  To say more would give too much away, but definitely check it out if you want a unique, compelling view on somewhat dark issues.

One of the movies that blew me away recently was The Killing by Stanley Kubrick, it is from 1956. The only reason that I decided to watch it was this:

Welles: Among those whom I would call “younger generation” Kubrick appears to me to be a giant.
Interviewer: But, for example, The Killing was more or less a copy of The Ashphalt Jungle?
Welles: Yes, but The Killing was better. The problem of imitation leaves me indifferent, above all if the imitator succeeds in surpassing the model… What I see in him is a talent not possessed by the great directors of the generation immediately preceding his… Perhaps this is because his temperament comes closer to mine.

Orson Welles, from a 1965 interview.

One of the dialogues of the Killing:

"You have my sympathies, then. You have not yet learned that in this life you have to be like everyone else - the perfect mediocraty; no better, no worse. Individuality's a monster and it must be strangled in it's cradle to make our friends feel confident. You know, I've often thought that the gangster and the artist are the same in the eyes of the masses. They are admired and hero-worhipped, but there is always present underlying wish to see them destroyed at the peak of their glory"

What an awesome film. It is one of the greatest film-noirs of all time - according to me, even if the start is a bit slow, as soon as it unfolds, leaves one speechless.

The trilogy by Park Chanwook

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
Old Boy
Lady Vengeance

absolutely incredible Asian cinema. Very powerful.

also, did anyone else see Apocalypto? there was a scene it that movie straight out of Papillon, with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. Some scenes in Apocalypto looked like they were shot by an amateur with a home video camcorder, and yet some scenes looked and felt incredible, i.e, the dream scene, where the man is standing there with his heart in his hands, and says, "run." Gave me chills.

I'm making a short film right now that comes from a short story in my child hood. It's almost like Ferris Bueller's Day Off meets Platoon. I can't wait to start filming.

And his surname is Lynch!

ps. Nathan, being a good filmmaker relies on the ability of getting away with plagiarism. Reservoir Dogs ripped the Killing off just like the Killing did with The Asphalt Jungle... a copy of a copy of a copy. Now seriously, The Killing is one of the most perfect film noirs I've seen in my life. And me being a Dr. Strangelove nut... Sterling Hayden is LOVE (Ugh the cacophony). Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids!!!

I think that the most brutal and unexpected scene in Reservoir Dogs is the carjacking.

I saw "Pan's Labyrinth" on Friday and it was one of the best films I have ever seen.

I was not impressed by the director's previous movies (Hellboy and Blade2) so I did not expect much.  I thought it would be a subtitled action film like "Brotherhood of the Wolf" I was so wrong.

It takes the most effective elements from The Wizard of OZ, Night of the Hunter, Lord of the Rings, Narnia and Ichi the Killer and combines them into something entirely it's own.  The last time I felt like this was when Pulp Fiction premiered.  Like Pulp Fiction, this movie takes elemrnts from movies with out feeling like a remeke of the movie that it was taken from.

If you plan to see this film I will warn you, it is rated R for verry disturbing levels of violence and is not to be viewed by children or immature teens.  The nasty scenes cut very deep but they have a reason for doing so and do not feel forced. There are no sexual sittuations in this film.

Do not read reviews before seeing it as there are spoilers that can defuse this film's magic if you know about them before them.

When the film ended, all I could think was "now I understand what Peter Jackson was trying to do when he made the Lord of the Rings films"

I've been trying to avoid all write ups on this. It comes out in Milwaukee a week from Friday. I can't wait.

I'd like to see it. It seems like a movie to watch on the big screen.

I want you to hear Robert Mitchum sings calypso - it's positively savage!

While watching it my eyes started to water and I could feel the hairs on my entire scalp standing up.

To say this is intense is an understatement.

Oh, man, I'm so stoked about "Pan's" now. Thanks, RV and welcome back (sorta)!

I'm going to try and see Curse of the Golden Flower this weekend.

The Killing was written by Jim Thompson, his books rock. Noir as its best. I am sober now.

That happens when you haven't seen El espinazo del diablo.
